Career advice: How can an embedded device test engineer move toward test development/HIL testing?

Hi everyone,

I am a 25-year-old embedded device test engineer from China, with around 3 years of work experience.

My current work mainly involves:

  • Embedded device testing and system debugging;
  • Test planning, test execution, and issue troubleshooting;
  • Hardware/software system integration;
  • Developing test tools and implementing some automation testing using Python.

My experience is mainly focused on embedded system testing, device integration, and problem analysis in real-world environments, rather than traditional software test development.

Recently, I would like to improve my technical skills and gradually move from a test execution-focused role toward a more engineering-oriented automation testing role.

The areas I am currently interested in include:

  • Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET);
  • Embedded software testing;
  • HIL (Hardware-in-the-Loop) testing;
  • Automotive electronics testing;
  • Test automation engineering.

I would like to ask experienced engineers for some career advice:

  1. What advantages and gaps should I consider when moving toward an SDET/test development role?
  2. Globally, which testing-related fields do you think have the best long-term career growth potential in the next few years?
  3. What core technologies and engineering skills are expected from test engineers in modern engineering teams?
  4. Based on my background, which direction would you recommend focusing on first? For example, test automation, embedded software testing, HIL testing, or another area?

My goal is not only to perform testing, but also to gradually develop deeper engineering skills, such as building test platforms, designing automation frameworks, developing simulation-based testing systems, and working on hardware/software integration testing.

I would really appreciate any advice or experience sharing from engineers in this field.
